Lyrics - Ca’ The Yowes To The Knows
Claire Hewitt
Kenny Graham

'One of Burns’ few songs written from a woman’s perspective. And what a beautiful ballad this is to sing and woo one’s sweetheart - whether he is a shepherd or not!'

Ca’ The Yowes To The Knows
Robert Burns, trad. - Performed by Claire Hewitt

Ca’ the yowes to the knows,
Ca’ them where the heather grows,
Ca’ them where the burnie rows,
My bonnie dearie.

As I gaed down the water side,
There I met my sheperd lad,
He row’d me sweetly in his plaid,
And he ca’d me his dearie.

Will ye gang down the water side
To see the waves sae sweetly glide
Beneath the hazels spreading wide
And he ca’d me his dearie.

I was bred up in nae sic school,
My shepherd lad to play the fool,
An’ a’ the day to sit in dool,
An nae’body to see me.

Ye shall get gowns and ribbons meet
Calf leather shoon upon your feet,
And in my arms ye’ll lie and sleep
And ye shall be my dearie

If ye’ll but stand to what ye’ve said
I’se gang with you my shepherd lad
And ye may ro’ me in yer plaid
And I shall be yer dearie

While waters whimple to the sea
While day blinks in the life sae hie,
Till clay cauld death shall blin’ my e’e
Ye shall be my dearie
